If your image features a person you will need written permission from that person before you can sell that image commercially. This written permission is called a model release and it represents the persons consent to be photographed and an agreement that they have no say in how that image is used by you.
- You need to have a signed model release for every recognizable person, in every image you submit.
- Body parts such as hands, legs and also silhouettes require a release.
- Self-portraits, shots of your friends and family members require a release.
- Try to get the release signed before you start shooting.
- Make sure the model understands the release before they sign it.
- For anyone under the age of 18, you will need to get a parent or guardian to sign the release on their behalf.
- A model release applies to the day of the shoot. You will need a new release for every day you shoot, even if you are shooting the same model.
- Every model release needs to be signed by the photographer and witnessed by a third person (the witness cannot be the photographer)
- Before an image can be accepted for sale as a Creative Rights Managed or Creative Royalty Free image it will need a release for any identifiable people in the photograph. Images uploaded without a release may only be selected for the Street (Editorial) Rights Managed collection.
- Each release needs to have an image of the model attached.
- The easiest model releases to submit are via a number of model release apps approved by RooM. You can use the links in the Model Release app section at the bottom of this page to download the apps. Only the RooM approved apps listed in this section may be used.
- Release scans need to be uploaded as a JPG, PDF, DOC, DOCX or an ODT file.

Currently we are unable to accept model releases generated via any app in China. However, we may be able to accept a Chinese language model release generated via an approved app and signed outside of China. Images associated with this release may still be licensed in China.
RooM will continue to review new model release apps as they are launched. However, contributors are responsible for ensuring they are using the correct version of our approved model release apps at the time of image upload to RooM.
